A survey of your hot and cold water systems that finds where Legionella bacteria could grow and spread, and sets out how to control the risk.
Who needs a Legionella risk assessment?
Employers, landlords and anyone in control of premises must identify and control the risk from Legionella in their water systems (HSE ACOP L8).
How often should a Legionella risk assessment be reviewed?
HSE sets no fixed interval. Review it regularly and whenever something changes, such as the water system, how the building is used or who manages it.
How a Legionella risk assessment works
- We survey your hot and cold water systems, tanks and outlets.
- We check water temperatures and look for stagnant water and other risks.
- You receive a written risk assessment with a list of remedial actions.
- We can then set up monitoring and remedial works to keep you compliant with ACOP L8.
Legionella control: the key facts
- Legionella bacteria multiply between 20°C and 45°C. They are dormant below 20°C and do not survive above 60°C. Source: HSE
- Hot water should be stored at 60°C or higher and reach 50°C at outlets within one minute (55°C in healthcare premises). Cold water should stay below 20°C. Source: HSE HSG274
- Duty holders must identify and assess the risk, then prevent or control it. Source: HSE ACOP L8
